John Coltrane (1926 -1967) was an artistic genius and a spiritual giant. In his early career, he was a part of Miles Davis' band, considered to be the greatest jazz band of all time. He was experimenting with new jazz and free jazz but developed his own style and ideas. He was renowned for his dedication to his craft and was said to practice for twenty five hours a day, often spending hours practicing one note. He succumbed to drink and hard drugs at a pivotal point in his career but he had the will power to clean up his life and he had, what he called a 'Spiritual Awakening' and went on to be one of Jazz's greatest musicians.

My painting places Coltrane against a contrasting split background, typical of Lautrec's style, and I feel significant of Coltrane's life. He faced up to his demons and emerged from a dark place to become a shining light in music, revered by his peers and an eternal influence to aspiring musicians. My painting captures the unique combination of Coltrane's style and coolness.
