The Hot Club style jazz was principally performed from the 1930's to 1950's by Manouche guitarist Django Reinhardt and French violinist Stephane Grappelli. The distinctive sound and speed of playing and the expertly crafted improvisations were in stark contrast to the Big Band music of the day and was not always in favour with the purists. I think Lautrec would have enjoyed the rebellious spirit of the Hot Club and associated himself with anything alternative and risqué. My painting uses Lautrec's style of flat bold colours and dramatic lighting that tricks the eye between realism and pattern.
