I work mainly with oil paints and I love using oil sticks, blending the paint directly onto the canvas with my fingers, it’s a tactile, almost sculptural way of painting. Gold and copper tones often find their way into my work for the way they catch and reflect light and in some of my more decorative pieces, I also use 22 carat gold leaf to add an extra layer of radiance.
Each piece begins with a carefully primed canvas, stretched over museum quality bars to ensure it will stand the test of time and prevent warping. I often paint around the edges of the deeper canvases, extending the image beyond its frame. When hung, the work takes on a three-dimensional aspect, standing forward, breathing a little and feeling vividly alive.
Photographs can only tell part of the story, so much of the texture, brush marks, the movement of light, the resonance with the energy of the painting is best experienced in person. I’m always happy to share more detailed images or welcome visitors to my studio, where you can see the work up close and feel its presence.
I also take on commissioned pieces for those who would like something created especially for them. Whether it’s a particular palette, mood, or sense of place you are drawn to I am happy to collaborate to bring a personal piece of work alive.
