Sarah Vaughan (1924–1990) was renowned for her exceptional vocal qualities. Often described as having an almost operatic voice, she retained her remarkable abilities well into her later years. It felt appropriate to focus my painting on Vaughan’s singing: her slightly tilted head, poised body posture, and subtle facial muscle tensions hint at her mastery in controlling her dynamic vocal range. I used Lautrec’s split-background technique to give the piece a stage-set feel, and the retro-style microphone helps to situate the scene in time.
